Holocaust Memorial 2025 commemoration event at Council House

Birmingham’s annual civic commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day will be staged at the Council House next week.
The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor, Ken Wood will lead the event on Monday (27 January). The event is free, open to all, and starts at 11am.
‘For a Better Future’ is the theme of this year’s event – to remember we can all learn from the past and take action to create an inclusive future for everyone.
commemorates the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi persecutions, as well as other genocides around the world.
This Memorial Day is a significant year and marks the 80-year anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s liberation, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex and the 30-year anniversary of Bosnian genocide.
This year’s programme will feature a candle-lighting remembrance ceremony and testimony from Mindu Hornick MBE and Aida Haughton MBE, who will talk about their experiences as Genocide survivors as well as poignant music and poetry performances.
Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Ken Wood, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity for us to come together and to take a moment of reflection on the past and apply lessons in fostering a more inclusive future.
“We are coming together to light a candle and remember victims of atrocities and genocides around the world, as well as those who are still sadly losing their lives through war, conflict and hate crime. I hope as many people as possible will join us at the Council House on 27 January.”
Holocaust Memorial Day is 27 January and people across the UK are being asked to join the Light the Darkness moment and to safely light a candle their window at 8pm, for a national moment of remembrance.
